Concrete Toppings

Toppings give clients the ability to easily create a new floor with their own designs and logos. Most of the time if the current substrate is in good shape the toppings can be applied over the current floor eliminating the need to remove and resurface prior to installation. Most applications can be completed in 3-4 days. For areas that need to be leveled the new topping can be installed up to two inches thick in one application. Toppings provide a clean canvas for unique patterns and the white color background creates a vibrant finished piece. Many toppings are also strong enough to be used in industrial settings, including loading docks and areas were forklifts are used frequently. The clean smooth surface allows for allergen free flooring, easy maintenance and great sustainability.

Required preparation and finishes for a standard installation:

If topping new concrete, concrete must have cured for 28 days. All surfaces must be tested for moisture content before installation. For substrates that have moisture problems depending on the level of moisture different control systems can be used as a primer.

Substrate must be dry and free of all grease, oil, dirt, dust, curing compounds, sealers, coatings, efflorescence, old adhesive residues or any other foreign material. To properly clean existing concrete it must be mechanically cleaned with a scarifier. All cracks, or divots must then be repaired and any expansion joints need to be prepped prior to the installation of the new topping.

The existing substrate will then be primed and the topping applied. We have toppings and applications that will work over wood, cement board, and existing concrete. Once the concrete topping has properly cured, color is added. After the color has dried, the area must be fully washed and left for 24 hours to dry completely. Decorative floors require a high solids sealer that must then cure for 24 hours. After this, three coats of floor polish are applied to the surface to act as a wear layer. The floor polish should be reapplied, as needed either once a month or more depending on foot traffic.

In addition to decorative staining different elements such as metal, glass or river rock can be broadcast into the topping and then ground, integral color may be used or tinted sealer to achieve other artistic looks. Stencils can be used to create intricate logos and borders. Photographic images may also be sealed into the floor for a unique design. East Coast has the ability to create custom stencils from jpeg files, cad files, digital photos and other print media.

To maintain the floor, regular cleaning with a simple soap solution and nonabrasive machine or mop is required. Floor polish will need to be reapplied as needed.
